... If I could reach through the screen to serve you one of my Southern homemade biscuits, I would. That is what Southern Hospitality is all about -- greeting a guest with something wonderful to eat and drink as soon as they come through the door.
In the old days of the South, a country ham biscuit and sweet tea was the standard offering to a guest. Since I can’t serve you a biscuit, at least I can show you how to make one to get you off to a good start. On my Biscuit Kitchen page you’ll find a classic recipe and a few tips that will get your biscuit love going in the right direction.
I am honored that so many people enjoyed, The Rise of the Southern Biscuit and have ordered the companion book, The Biscuit Dive Guide. I discovered as I researched and wrote the film and book, that the simple gesture of baking biscuits for the people you love is a worthwhile tradition to keep in these modern times. It is fun, easy, and you make it unique -- your own.
As I’ve baked and eaten my way through this project, I discovered the South’s best Biscuit makers who shared their biscuit making traditions, recipes, and baking advice with me. I found that biscuits are as wonderful and diverse as the one who makes them. It is all in the approach. Now I make a array of biscuits for the people I love. I hope you catch the biscuit making bug here too.
If you travel to Nashville and want to learn how to make a biscuit, look me up, as I love sharing my film and biscuit making finds with visitors to Music City. And if you have a wonderful homemade biscuit joint in your town, write me and let me know about it so I add it to my biscuit list.

Biscuit by biscuit, Maryann Byrd and her  independent film and book are reviving the lost tradition of homemade biscuit making.  Since, The Rise of the Southern Biscuit aired on PBS in 2007, thousands of copies of the film and Book, The Biscuit Dive Guide have sold around the world.   Maryann speaks to groups and teaches them how to master the lost art of Southern Biscuit making.

Maryann was in New Orleans for Hungery in the South as Guest Curator for the Southern Food and Beverage Museum.  She demonstrated classic Southern Biscuit techniques at the    French Market and signed copies of her book, The Biscuit Dive Guide at  books at the cookbook fair at the Market.
